Now this is the second time I’m going to afternoon tea in a week. It’s never enough really… hahahaha

The food is served in a 3 tier tray but cant be refilled. They have really cute tea pots and the atmosphere is great. I would definitely recommend this place. The price is really reasonable too!

Another cute little tea pot. Can’t believe they serve teas in different types of teapots.

Yesterday I attended my first Prom for this year. To be honest, I bought the tickets 2 months ago and have no idea at all what I was gonna see. In addition, when I decided on this prom, I didnt do any research to find out what it was all about. The title was familiar (Romeo and Julie – Love Scene) plus it’s classical music, I thought it wont be too hard to appreciate the performance.

I was very WRONG!

I’m ashamed to admit I fell asleep 3 times and I fidgeted non-stop throughout the performance (when I was not sleeping). To add on to the challenge of trying to appreciate the show, the second act was sung in German….. Now since after the show, I realised the prom’s programme is available online and I’ve seen people carrying printed paper of the programme. I didnt quite understand why they keep looking at the programme during the show. It was because the programme has the lyrics and the translation in English!

So now I’m well prepared to attend my second and third prom. The last one will be a contemporary one (gonna see Jamie Cullum). Can’t wait.

Prom 21: Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Sir Simon Rattle as the conductor.

Programme:
Berlioz Romeo and Juliet – Love Scene (18 mins)
interval
Wagner Tristan und Isolde – Act 2 (80 mins)

I’ve been living in London for almost 3 years and I’m ashamed to say I’ve never really attended the English Afternoon Tea before. So finally I arranged to try the afternoon tea at the Athenaeum Hotel (apparently award winning) with the ladies. It was also a good opportunity for me to catch up with everyone since I’ve been away for 2 months.

According to Wiki, afternoon tea is a light meal typically eaten between 3pm and 5pm. Traditionally, loose tea is brewed in a teapot and served in teacups with milk and sugar. This is accompanied by sandwiches (customarilycucumber, egg and cress, fish paste, ham, and smoked salmon), scones (with clotted cream and jam, see cream tea) and usually cakes and pastries (such as Battenberg, fruit cake or Victoria sponge). The food is often served on a tiered stand; there may be no sandwiches, but bread or scones with butter or margarine and optional jam or other spread.

The spread is quite standard (nothing to shout about) but the tea is amazing. The deco seems a bit ‘cold’ and I was quite annoyed that we were pressured to leave even before we could finish our cakes as the second session was about to start.

Steph’s rating: 6/10. Will definitely try afternoon tea in another hotel.

Remember back in January Dav and I went to India to attend a wedding then toured around the South for 2 weeks? Well I bought 2 saris when we were there. So finally I got the blouse made for these 2 saris in Brickfields just before I go back to London.

To wear a sari, one needs to know how to tie it. The whole costume consists of the petticoat, the blouse and the 4 to 6 metres unstitched cloth. The tricky part is when tying the 4-6 metres cloth around your body with pleats. This webpage provides a very good graphical demonstration –> http://www.utsavsarees.com/saree/wearsari.htm.

So you can see how complicated the process is. Therefore when I heard that nowadays the tailor can sew ready made saris. I wanted to make sure that the tailor I go to can sew the ready made saris too since I do not know how to tie it. PLUS there is no need for me to learn. Luckily an Indian colleague of mine know a tailor in Brickfields and off we went to see him on Monday. The saris were ready for pickup 3 days later.

I am very happy with the end results. Here’s a preview of my new saris. What do you think?

P/s: Excuse the quality of the photos. It was taken with my first generation iPhone.

It has been a looong time since I really like a tv series… CSI (the original version) has always been my all time favourite. Then came along House which I’ve stopped following ever since the original group of doctors disbanded. There was also X-Files which was also a favourite when I was in secondary school (Remember Joyce???)

I just wanted to share some of my new tv favourites. Who knows, maybe you’ll like it too.

The Mentalist – Now in their second season, this show is all about crime solving using the main character’s strong observation skills. The show is not too serious and the lead, Simon Baker (English actor) is quite cute too. Even Dav likes watching this show.

Fringe – Also in their second season, this show reminds me of X-Files. The show is about solving paranormal, unexplained occurrences. It also has a conspiracy theory where the US government is experimenting with various things. Exactly like X-Files! I like.

Gavin and Stacey – An award winning British comedy series. The show revolves around the lives of the title characters Gavin and Stacey, and follows their family lives, and the lives of their best friends, Smithy and Nessa, respectively. I was introduced to this show by my Geordie colleague. It is very very funny although at times we have a hard time understanding the accent. Sad to say, the creators have decided to end the show after 3 seasons.

After 3 seasons, there’s still no news whether they will continue writing another season or they will make a movie. The group has also been touring for the past 2 years which we missed last year.

The week is passing by too fast! Last week especially… the social calendar was packed! I had something to do every night after work except for Monday. Here’s a summary of what I did:

Tuesday – Dinner at Wahaca

Dav arranged a dinner with his colleagues at a Mexican restaurant in Canary Wharf. The food is quite good. The restaurant even give away chilli seeds to grow at home (to be exact, it is Serrano chillies. A kind of Mexican chillies). We actually went and got ourselves pots and compost to try and grow chillis. Last year, our Aussie friends gave us some tulip seeds as well, which we have not tried to grow. So we thought why not grow everything at one go. Let’s see whether we’re successful.

Wednesday – The Misanthrope

My office was selling subsidized tickets to this play last year, which has Keira Knightley in it!! I didn’t manage to get the tickets but luck was on my side on Monday when I saw a colleague selling her tickets. It only costs £27 to see this play! I managed to get 2 extra tickets so I invited NB and AA to come along. It was definitely worth it. Keira was good… she’s damn skinny as well! LoL.

Thursday – Megan Mullally and Supreme Music Program

A colleague saw an ad in the Metro newspaper (daily free newspaper available in the train / tube station) for this concert. In case you’re wondering who she is, she was the annoying character in Will & Grace with the squeaky voice. Yes, she can sing, even with that voice! Apparently she acted in the new version of Fame (which was a flop). Since we manage to get discounted tickets, I thought it was worth a try. It’s always good to discover new music. She was quite good but not amazing. Will I see her again? Maybe not.

Friday – Chinese Grocery shopping at SeeWoo

We decided to invite our friends and colleagues to our house for a CNY gathering. For this gathering, we needed to buy Chinese snacks and food since it is CNY. Instead of going to Chinatown, Dav wanted to check out the Chinese grocer, SeeWoo in Greenwich. This place is HUGE and had lots of variety. The only down side is that it is so far from our house but relatively near to Dav’s office. I dont think we will come back unless we have to get alot of asian good like for this gathering.
